I agree with you - and I wasn't. Or rather, it's not that I was or wasn't, I simply didn't really pay attention.
But I guess some things take time... I should have included the quote from TS Eliot in my post: "...and at the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and to know the place for the first time."
again I’m impressed by your „deep-diving“ into a new world or topic! And how beautiful all these are ! To be honest, I too always wanted to ask you about those -may I call them simply „tiles“?
Actually, I’ve found something connected to this topic in Poland some years ago that caught my attention: in the Gniezno „Museum of the Origins of the Polish State“ I‘ve found the richest collection of Gothic stove tiles in Europe. Though they aren’t by far as colourful, they are impressive & beautiful, too !
Thanks for the link - though very different from the Portuguese ones, these Polish tiles are indeed beautiful. There is a place here in Szczecin that renovates old stove tiles, and produces new ones... I have been meaning to visit them. There are some really beautiful examples and I wonder how they are made, since they are meant to withstand high temperatures. Maybe a topic for another post ;)
Wow! absolutely gorgeous. I did think 'azulejo' comes from 'azul'. Although I've studied Arabic, I hadn't come across the word for 'small blue polished stone' — yet ~ what language has a single special word for that?! Thank you so much for enlightening me. obrigadissimo 💙 🙏
2008 was the year I left Portugal for the fifth time... until now. We keep day dreaming about going back but that likely won't happen for a few years yet...
As Portuguese, we should be proud of our tiling heritage. We’ve produced beautiful stuff and we still do. Beautiful post, Sara!
Elliot, couldn’t have said it better!😊
Thank you, Luz, and thank you for reading!

Thank you so much, Veronika!
I think everybody makes the connection with "azul" - I did too until not long ago :)
I don't speak Arabic but have often thought it must be a beautiful language, and the writing always looks like a work of art :)
And you speak Portuguese? Muito obrigada por ler e por comentar! 🙏🏽😊
Claro que sim! We've been living in Portugal since 2008. De nada. Grata pela tua escrita 🙏 😉
Ah agora percebo! 😊
How do you find it?
